Benton High School teacher awarded grant

BROOKFIELD - Kari Strang, accounting teacher at Benton High School in Benton, has been awarded a 2009 Accounting Careers Awareness Grant in the amount of $1,250 from the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants Educational Foundation, Inc.

Accounting teachers who participated in the fall 2009 WICPA High School Educators Symposium were offered the opportunity to write proposals about why they should receive funding. Strang was one of 24 teachers to receive a grant.

Strang will use her grant money to take her students on a field trip to Milwaukee where they will participate in The Bucks Experience, learning about the business aspect and visiting with accountants at The Milwaukee Bucks. They will also meet the accounting staff at Miller Park and at the Country Springs Hotel.

The grant allows schools to partner with CPAs to give students the opportunity to see what it is like to be a CPA.

“The WICPA Educational Foundation is pleased with Strang’s plan to bring accounting to the lives of her students,” said Jim Miller, CPA, president of the Educational Foundation.

The WICPA encourages lasting innovations that can be shared with other teachers. In addition, it supports career awareness and also provides accounting scholarships and grants to individuals and organizations that aim to further their education in accounting.

The WICPA is the premier professional organization for Wisconsin CPAs, with more than 8,000 members working in public accounting, industry, government and education. Like other professionals, certified public accountants are required to obtain additional education, take a rigorous exam and become certified. Please identify all CPAs by including their credential with their names. This identification enhances the accuracy and credibility of your reporting.
