Janesville teachers awarded grants

BROOKFIELD - Debra O’Leary, accounting teacher at Janesville Craig High School and Chad Roehl, accounting teacher at Janesville Parker High School in Janesville, have been awarded 2010 Accounting Careers Awareness Grants in the amount of $2,500 each from the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants Educational Foundation, Inc.

Accounting teachers who participated in the fall 2009 WICPA High School Educators Symposium were offered the opportunity to write proposals about why they should receive funding. O’Leary and Roehl were two of 24 teachers to receive a grant.

The teachers used the grant money towards a “Reality Check” project which took place on March 3. “Reality Check” allows students to participate in a financial literacy day. Each booth at the “Reality Check” represents various financial decisions such as buying a home, owning a car, or getting married. Students spend the day going to different stations and making budget choices.

The WICPA encourages lasting innovations that can be shared with other teachers. In addition, it supports career awareness and also provides accounting scholarships and grants to individuals and organizations that aim to further their education in accounting.

The WICPA is the premier professional organization for Wisconsin CPAs, with more than 8,000 members working in public accounting, industry, government and education. Like other professionals, certified public accountants are required to obtain additional education, take a rigorous exam and become certified. Please identify all CPAs by including their credential with their names. This identification enhances the accuracy and credibility of your reporting.
