Mellen High School teacher awarded grant
BROOKFIELD - Kimberly Dwyer, accounting teacher at Mellen High School in Mellen, has been awarded a 2010 Accounting Careers Awareness Grant in the amount of $1,725 from the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants Educational Foundation, Inc. Accounting teachers who participated in the fall 2009 WICPA High School Educators Symposium were offered the opportunity to write proposals about why they should receive funding. Dwyer was one of 24 teachers to receive a grant. Dwyer plans to use the grant money toward an innovative approach to teaching accounting using technology. She will create a series of video podcasts to supplement her curriculum throughout the 2010-2011 school year. In addition, she will use funds to attend a class at the National Institute of Financial and Economic Literacy. The grant allows schools to partner with CPAs to give students the opportunity to see what it is like to be a CPA. “The WICPA Educational Foundation is pleased with Dwyer’s plan to bring accounting to the lives of her students,” said Jim Miller, president of the Educational Foundation. The WICPA encourages lasting innovations that can be shared with other teachers. In addition, it supports career awareness and also provides accounting scholarships and grants to individuals and organizations that aim to further their education in accounting. |
