Seneca High School teacher awarded grant

    BROOKFIELD, Wis.- Donna Aspenson, accounting teacher at Seneca High School in Seneca, has been awarded a 2010 Accounting Careers Awareness Grant in the amount of $359 from the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants Educational Foundation, Inc.

    Accounting teachers who participated in the fall 2009 WICPA High School Educators Symposium were offered the opportunity to write proposals about why they should receive funding. Aspenson was one of 24 teachers to receive a grant.

    Aspenson plans on using the grant money to take her students on a field trip to La Crosse, where they will meet with accountants and tour the La Crosse Center and Kwik Trip.  They will also visit and meet CPAs at public accounting firm Morrison & Associates.

    “The grant allows schools to partner with CPAs to give students the opportunity to see what it is like to be a CPA,” said Jim Miller, CPA, president of the Educational Foundation.

    The WICPA encourages lasting innovations that can be shared with other teachers. In addition, it supports career awareness and also provides accounting scholarships and grants to individuals and organizations that aim to further their education in accounting.

    The WICPA is the premier professional organization for Wisconsin CPAs, with more than 8,000 members working in public accounting, industry, government and education. Like other professionals, certified public accountants are required to obtain additional education, take a rigorous exam and become certified.
