Sun Prairie High School teacher awarded grant

    BROOKFIELD- Miriam Fey, accounting teacher at Sun Prairie High School in Sun Prairie, has been awarded a 2010 Accounting Careers Awareness Grant in the amount of $471 from the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants Educational Foundation, Inc. 

    Accounting teachers who participated in the fall 2009 WICPA High School Educators Symposium were offered the opportunity to write proposals about why they should receive funding. Fey was one of 24 teachers to receive a grant.

    Fey plans to use the grant money to take her students on a field trip to Milwaukee. They will participate in The Bucks Experience, an activity sponsored by the Milwaukee Bucks, where they will tour and learn about the framework of the organization, including the business aspect. They will also meet with a member of the accounting department.

    The grant allows schools to partner with CPAs to give students the opportunity to see what it is like to be a CPA.  

    “The WICPA Educational Foundation is pleased with Fey’s plan to bring accounting to the lives of her students,” said Jim Miller, CPA, president of the Educational Foundation.

    The WICPA encourages lasting innovations that can be shared with other teachers. In addition, it supports career awareness and also provides accounting scholarships and grants to individuals and organizations that aim to further their education in accounting.

The WICPA is the premier professional organization for Wisconsin CPAs, with more than 8,000 members working in public accounting, industry, government and education. Like other professionals, certified public accountants are required to obtain additional education, take a rigorous exam and become certified.
