Wauzeka-Steuben High School teacher awarded grant
BROOKFIELD - Karen Sjoberg, accounting teacher at Wauzeka-Steuben Schools in Wauzeka, has been awarded a 2010 Accounting Careers Awareness Grant in the amount of $2,500 from the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants Educational Foundation, Inc. Accounting teachers who participated in the fall 2009 WICPA High School Educators Symposium were offered the opportunity to write proposals about why they should receive funding. Sjoberg was one of 24 teachers to receive a grant. Sjoberg plans on using the grant money towards a “Reality Check” for students in Crawford County which will take place on March 25. “Reality Check” allows students to participate in a financial literacy day. Each booth at the “Reality Check” represents various financial decisions such as buying a home, owning a car, or getting married. Students spend the day going to different stations and making budget choices. “The grant allows schools to partner with CPAs to give students the opportunity to see what it is like to be a CPA,” said Jim Miller, CPA, president of the Educational Foundation. The WICPA encourages lasting innovations that can be shared with other teachers. In addition, it supports career awareness and also provides accounting scholarships and grants to individuals and organizations that aim to further their education in accounting. |
