Adopt a high school in your neighborhood!

The goal of the Adopt a School program is to have Wisconsin accounting firms and companies select and adopt a school, develop a relationship with a teacher and school and become a resource for them. As a resource, the firm can provide teachers with real life answers and experiences to help them while teaching.

Ideas
Here are some ideas on how relationships with teachers and schools can be formed.  The ideas came from a survey to high school accounting teacher.

  • Speak to a high school class about accounting careers.

  • Be a guest teacher for the class period and teach a lesson.

  • Present a case study on accounting.

  • Present a case study on ethics.

  • Bring students to your firm for a field trip. Talk about your clients. What do your employees do? What software and computer programs are used? What office equipment is used?

  • Bring students to your firm for job shadows. Show them computer programs used, let them sit in on a client meeting, have them talk to young CPAs about the transition from college to your firm, be specific about job duties.

  • Host a booth at a high school career fair.

  • Host a pizza party at your firm over the lunch hour. Have a CPA speak about the variety of careers in accounting.

  • Bring a high school teacher to your firm for a
    weeklong internship in the summer.

  • Participate in Take A Teacher to Work Day.

  • Have your firm’s marketing director help your local teacher “market” the accounting class to students, parents & guidance counselors.

  • Be a CPA e-mail pen pal for accounting students.

  • Write a case study for teachers to use in current and future classes.

  • Talk with the school’s guidance counselor about the importance of accounting and job opportunities.

  • Be an FBLA judge.

  • Help an FBLA group prepare for a competitive event.

  • Be available to teachers when they have questions.

  • Show a class how to interpret a financial statement.

  • Review the class text book and offer real-life examples for one of the lessons.

  • Show the class how to play an AICPA online computer game such as the forensic accounting game,
    “Catch me if you can.”

Case studies

Talk to your teacher about what the students are covering in class. Find case studies from common high school accounting text books, revise them to show real-world examples and present them to the class. Information from you will mean more to them than if it came from their teacher!
