IRS adds QR codes to tax notices

October 13, 2020

The IRS is adding quick response (QR) barcode technology to certain tax notices.

QR codes can convey more information from an individual’s smartphone in a short period of time than traditional barcodes.

The IRS is using the technology to allow taxpayers to scan codes on two particular notices, the CP14 or CP14 IA, with their smartphones and direct them to the IRS website.

From there, taxpayers can securely access their account, set up a payment plan or contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Learn more.
