The IRS will not provide “blanket” relief from tax penalties incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig told CPAs at an AICPA conference Tuesday, Nov. 17.
Rettig and other top IRS officials addressed penalties among other COVID-19 pandemic recovery and longer-term priorities for the agency.
The IRS rather prefers to focus on specific procedures already available to taxpayers, including reasonable-cause defenses and the first-time abatement of penalties, Rettig said. Learn more.
