IRS delays tax season until Feb. 12

January 15, 2021

The IRS is delaying the start of the 2020 tax filing season to Feb. 12.

The delay will give the IRS more time to prepare amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the latest distribution of Economic Impact Payments and changes in the tax laws.

Nevertheless, the IRS announced earlier this week that all tax forms and instructions are ready and last-minute changes to the tax laws are already included.

The IRS encourages taxpayers to file electronically with direct deposit as soon as they have the information they need. People can start filing their tax returns immediately with tax software companies that are now accepting tax returns. The IRS will receive the returns starting Feb. 12.
