Identity theft a risk for online consumers

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, more Americans are shopping online but may not be taking the necessary precautions to protect their identities.

Nearly 1 in 5 (19%) Americans who shop online say they fell victim to identity theft or attempted identity theft in the past year, according to a new AICPA survey.

And while most respondents view identity theft as a real threat, many are not taking steps that could protect them while shopping online, the survey found.

A strong password is the first line of defense, one expert says.
