March 4, 2021

New issue briefs from the Wisconsin Legislative Council detail the state’s laws regarding personal internet account privacy, records containing personal information and the use of Social Security numbers (SSNs).

Wisconsin’s internet privacy protection law generally prohibits employers, educational institutions and landlords from requesting or requiring a person to provide access to or observation of their personal internet accounts.

Wisconsin law establishes various protections for personal information, including laws tailored to sectors like health care, insurance and education.

The council also provided an overview of the restrictions on state and local governmental use of a person’s SSN, permissible use and situations that require SSN collection.
