Why young accounting pros forgo CPA credential

June 17, 2021

Young accounting professionals who do not pursue CPA licensure cite a lack of time and professional need to do so, according to a new report from the Illinois CPA Society.

The 2021 report used feedback from a survey sent out last fall throughout Illinois to accounting students, graduates and professionals under the age of 35, including both CPAs and non-CPAs, garnering 3,102 respondents in all.

An overwhelming majority (88%) of respondents identified themselves as either being a CPA, in the process of becoming one or planning on becoming one. Respondents who said they were not actively pursuing CPA licensure gave, in part, the growing reason that they do not see the credential as vital to their professional lives. See the findings.
