IRS shares business guide for protecting taxpayer data

August 5, 2021

The IRS has released a new business guide for safeguarding taxpayer data, which includes basic security steps and solutions to weaken the threat of cybercrimes.

The guide seeks to help tax professionals use security measures, recognize signs of data theft, respond and recover from a data breach, and comply with the FTC Safeguards Rule.

Data thefts at tax professionals’ offices are on the rise. About 80% of organizations worldwide expect to experience a data breach impacting consumer data in the next 12 months, according to a new report.

“Combatting today’s cybercriminals takes all of us working together,” the IRS states in the guide. “Everyone has a role to play in protecting taxpayer information.”
