IRS sets user fee for estate tax closing letter

September 28, 2021

Final regulations from the IRS institute a user fee of $67 for the agency to issue an estate tax closing letter.

An estate tax closing letter informs its authorized recipient of the IRS’ acceptance of the estate tax return and provides some return information.

Previously, the IRS issued estate tax returns free of charge. Because of various constraints, the IRS determined a user fee is now appropriate.

The IRS will publish the regulations on Sept. 28.
