Spotting a fake IRS letter

The IRS continues to roll out more letters relating to 2020 tax returns, which, unfortunately, also means more opportunities for fraudsters to scam unwary taxpayers.

With fake IRS letters now in circulation with real ones, it is a good time to remind clients how to spot the fraudulent letters right away.

The short answer to clients is to verify directly with the IRS if they receive a suspicious letter asking for personal information or payment for back taxes. Short of that, there are more ways to spot the fakes. See them.
