New phishing scams target tax pros

March 1, 2022

With tax season underway, the IRS and state tax agencies are warning tax professionals of new email scams attempting to steal tax software credentials.

These cybercriminals try to steal client data and tax preparers’ identities to file fraudulent tax returns for refunds.

The latest phishing scam email uses the IRS logo and a variety of subject lines, including “Action Required: Your account has now been put on hold.”

The IRS has also observed similar scam emails from a “tax preparation application provider” claiming to provide an “unusual activity report.”

The IRS warns tax professionals not to trust any suspicious email reporting a suspended account due to unusual activity and to avoid following its instructions. These scam emails likely include malicious links or attachments designed to steal information. Learn more.
