IRS will clear backlog by year-end, Rettig says

IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig this week told House members that the service will process its backlog of unprocessed work by the end of 2022.

Appearing before the House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Oversight on Thursday, March 17, Rettig reported on the current filing season.

When asked about the IRS’ recent implementation of surge teams reassigned to processing the agency’s backlog, Rettig replied that the service would “absolutely” clear the work by December. Learn more.
