Paper returns major cause of backlog, IRS says

Paper-filed returns are largely to blame for the current IRS backlog of tax returns, according to Erin Collins of the IRS National Taxpayer Advocate (NTA).

In the latest NTA blog, Collins introduced a Taxpayer Advocate Directive (TAD) that urges the IRS to use document-scanning technology within the next two filing seasons.

This new directive aims to relieve IRS challenges with manual processing of tax returns and prevent future issues like the current backlog resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn more.
