IRS eases application process for residency certification

The IRS has temporarily revised its procedures for some submitters of Form 8802, the application for U.S. residency certification, to facilitate applications where the agency has not yet completed its processing of the applicant’s most recently filed tax return.

The new policy applies to individuals for whom the IRS has asked for a signed copy of their most recent return to support their application because their filed return had not yet been posted when they filed the Form 8802.

The policy applies to applicants requesting a two-year certification and will last for a two-year pilot period with a possible extension, the IRS said. Read more.
