IRS mostly correct on recovery rebate credits, TIGTA says

The IRS correctly calculated taxpayers’ eligibility for a recovery rebate credit in the 2021 filing seasons 99.3% of the time, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) recently reported.

However, even the corresponding 0.7% error rate involved $603 million in improper credit allowances, and TIGTA found other instances where eligible individuals did not receive a recovery rebate credit at all.

The TIGTA report, dated May 19, analyzed the reasons for the errors and made 22 recommendations. The IRS disagreed with 12 of them. Learn more.
