IRS makes more progress on tax return backlog

June 21, 2022

Following intensive work during the past several months, the IRS recently announced that it will process a key group of individual tax returns filed during 2021 by the end of this week.

Due to issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic and staffing shortages, the IRS began 2022 with a massive backlog of paper tax returns and correspondence filed during 2021. The agency is now on track to complete the processing of Form 1040s received in 2021.

As of June 10, the IRS processed more than 4.5 million of the more than 4.7 million tax returns received in 2021. Learn more.
