IRS gets jump-start on hiring for next tax-filing season

The IRS recently announced that it hired 4,000 new customer service representatives to answer phones and provide other services for the 2023 tax-filing season.

The service took on the new staffers over the past several months and trained them to help taxpayers, including answering phone calls, the IRS said.

Over the past months, the IRS leveraged its direct-hire authority to quickly fill vacant positions, even offering jobs to qualified individuals on the spot.

The goal set by the IRS in March was to hire 10,000 new employees within a year to help reduce the backlog of returns and calls. The next goal is to add another 1,000 customer service representatives by the end of the calendar year, the IRS reported. Read more.
