IRS reminds tax preparers to renew their PTINs for 2023

November 9, 2022

The IRS is reminding U.S. tax return preparers to renew their preparer tax identification numbers (PTINs) before the start of the 2023 tax season. All PTINs expire on Dec. 31, 2022.

Anyone who prepares or helps prepare a federal tax return for compensation must have a valid PTIN from the IRS for preparing returns. The fee to renew or obtain a PTIN is $30.75 for 2023. The PTIN fee is non-refundable.

The IRS strongly recommends tax preparers with a 2022 PTIN to renew it online. Physical renewal forms can take more than a month to process. See these steps for renewing online.
