IRS reminder: Be wary of fraudsters during the holiday season

November 28, 2022

The IRS, state tax agencies and the nation’s tax industry, are warning taxpayers and tax professionals to take extra steps to protect their financial and tax information during the holidays.

Taxpayers and their families face a heightened risk in the coming months as fraudsters take advantage of the holiday season to trick victims into sharing sensitive information by email, text message and online. Identity thieves use that information to try to file tax returns and steal refunds.

To help combat these scams, the 2022 Security Summit dedicated a week this month to educating the public on the warning signs of fraud and how to avoid being a victim. For more information, review these resources.
