ChatGPT loses to accounting students in new study

April 27, 2023

After conquering the Wharton MBA, the bar exam, 13 of 15 AP courses and the GRE verbal test, ChatGPT finally met its Waterloo in the form of an accounting class, a recent survey found.

The popular artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot did not merely do poorly either — with a score of 47.4%, it failed, not even getting a D grade.

The recent survey from Brigham Young University involved 327 co-authors from 186 educational institutions in 14 countries. Together, they contributed more than 25,000 classroom accounting exam questions.

The questions covered accounting information systems, auditing, financial accounting, managerial accounting and more.

Human students, while not exactly acing the questions, did much better, averaging 76.7%. What the researchers find most promising, however, is how the chatbot can help improve teaching and learning for future accounting students. Learn more.
