The IRS announced Monday, July 24, that it will end its policy of unannounced visits to taxpayers by agency revenue officers.
“Effective immediately, unannounced visits will end except in a few unique circumstances and will be replaced with mailed letters to schedule meetings,” the IRS said in a statement.

“Changing this long-standing procedure will increase confidence in our tax administration work,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said, calling the change a “common-sense step.”
Revenue officers will now contact taxpayers through an appointment letter and schedule a follow-up meeting, according to the new policy. Read more.
