IRS to allow certain e-signatures indefinitely

October 31, 2023

The IRS will allow the use of electronic signatures on certain tax forms indefinitely, the agency announced earlier this month.

The decision comes after the temporary relief provided during the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed taxpayers to use digital or e-signatures on specified paper forms.

The IRS updated its Internal Revenue Manual to allow alternatives to handwritten signatures for more than 40 tax forms.

The agency also extended the use of encrypted email for direct communication with IRS employees through October 31, 2025.
