Gov. Evers signs financial literacy bill for high schools

December 6, 2023

Gov. Tony Evers signed into law a WICPA-supported bill on Wednesday, Dec. 6, that requires high school students to complete at least one-half credit of personal financial literacy to graduate.

Assembly Bill 109 (now 2023 Wisconsin Act 60) requires high school students to complete at least one-half credit of personal financial literacy to graduate, starting with the 2028 graduating class.

“We have to make sure our kids have the tools and skills to make smart financial and budgeting decisions to prepare for their future, so ensuring our kids have strong financial literacy is essential to setting them up for success as adults,” Evers said.

The personal financial literacy curriculum includes lessons on financial mindset, education and employment, money management, saving and investing, credit and debt, and risk management and insurance.

Tammy Hofstede, WICPA president & CEO, and also serves on the Governor’s Council on Financial Literacy and Capability, stated, “By educating our youth with the knowledge and skills to begin to navigate the complexities of personal finance today, we are fostering a generation of informed decision-makers ready to build a stable and prosperous tomorrow. This bill is an investment in our students as adults for their future financial success.”
