WICPA advises CPA Exam candidates to request COVID extension, credit relief

December 21, 2023

The WICPA has worked continuously with the Wisconsin Accounting Examining Board to reinstate parts of the CPA Exam lost during the COVID-19 pandemic and to develop a process for applicants to request relief from the time of the pandemic and for any legitimate reason moving forward.

The Wisconsin Accounting Examining Board is now accepting written requests to reinstate lost parts of the CPA Exam related to the pandemic, between Jan. 1, 2020, and May 31, 2023.

The WICPA asks that you email your written requests to WICPA President & CEO Tammy Hofstede at tammy@wicpa.org. She will pass along those requests to a direct contact with the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS).

Written requests should include the following information:

  1. Refer to the Accy 2.304(5) rule that states:

(5) The board may on a case-by-case basis extend the 18-month period of credit for sections of the Uniform CPA Examination passed, or the duration of the 18-month rolling period, upon the applicant showing to the board's satisfaction that the inability to pass all sections of the examination within the 18-month period was due to one of the following:

     (a) The sickness of the candidate or a member of the candidate’s immediate family if the candidate substantiates the illness by a doctor’s certificate.
     (b) A death in the candidate’s immediate family if the candidate provides proof of death.
     (c) Temporary military service.
     (d) Other good reason deemed acceptable by the board.

  1. Request a waiver to reinstate lost parts of the CPA Exam (list each and original date of passing each part).
  2. Provide a valid reason (be as detailed as possible with reasons why you did not complete the remaining parts of the exam).
  3. Recommend a reasonable time that you will be able to complete the remaining parts of the exam for the board to consider.

DSPS will notify you of the Accounting Examining Board’s decision, and if approved, will also relay the decision to NASBA.

Lastly, the WICPA would like to assist and follow the success of applicants who ask for exam extensions from the DSPS and Accounting Examining Board. Please contact Tammy with your updates at tammy@wicpa.org or by calling 262-785-0445, ext. 4518.
