The IRS has launched the Simple Notice initiative to review, redesign and deploy tax notices, as part of its ongoing modernization efforts to simplify and clarify tax notices for individual taxpayers.
The IRS has already redesigned 31 notices and plans to focus on reviewing, redesigning and deploying up to 200 notices for the next tax season.
The agency is consulting with taxpayers and tax professionals to gather feedback on the redesign process. The goal is to make it easier for taxpayers to understand tax issues and reduce questions and headaches.
The IRS also plans to review and redesign notices for business taxpayers in the future. The agency believes that plain language notices will help taxpayers respond online without the need to call the IRS.
The IRS recently conducted a pilot test with redesigned tax notices, which resulted in shorter and more readable notices with clear instructions and a code for online response. Learn more.
