EFIN scam targets tax professionals

February 15, 2024

The IRS is alerting tax professionals of a scam email impersonating various software companies to steal electronic filing identification numbers (EFINs).

The scammers impersonate software companies and say in the email that they need EFIN documents for a required verification to transmit tax returns. The IRS has received dozens of reports of the scam.

The IRS cautions tax professionals who receive the spam emails to not respond to the sender or proceed with any of the steps displayed in the email.

To help protect tax professionals against this emerging scam, the IRS is hosting a special series of educational webinars this week. See more details.
