IRS to issue more refunds if child tax credit bill passes

February 26, 2024

IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel has assured parents that they don't need to wait to file their 2024 tax returns while a child tax bill is pending in the Senate.

If passed, the child tax credit per child would increase from $1,600 to $1,800 for 2024 tax returns.

Werfel said the IRS will ensure that taxpayers who have already filed will receive any additional refunds if the bill is passed.

To qualify for the child tax credit, the child must be under 17 years old, be a dependent and have a valid Social Security number.
