IRS sees a 1.1% increase in filed tax returns this year

The final numbers from the IRS this tax season show an increase in almost every filing statistic category compared to 2024.

According to data from the IRS, the number of returns filed in 2025 was up 1.1% from last year, with 140.6 million returns received. The IRS processed 138 million of these returns, up 1.5% from 2024.

This year, the number of refunds was about the same as 2024, at 86 million. The total amount refunded, however, was up 3.2% this year, at $253 billion. The average refund amount also increased 3.3% to $2,942. See more statistics.
