IRS announces first day of 2026 filing season

January 9, 2026

The IRS recently announced that the 2026 filing season for individual tax returns will start on Monday, Jan. 26.

Several new tax law provisions of H.R. 1 — commonly known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act — will take effect this year, which could impact federal taxes, credits and deductions.

Taxpayers have until Wednesday, April 15, to file their 2025 tax returns and pay any tax due.

The IRS expects to receive about 164 million individual income tax returns this year, with most taxpayers filing electronically.

The IRS’s One, Big, Beautiful Provisions webpage provides more information that could help lower tax bills and potentially increase refund amounts.
