Small firms and family leave

The federal Family and Medical Leave Act applies to businesses with 50 or more employees but not necessarily to smaller firms. The Act mandates that eligible employees receive up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for certain medical and family needs.

It’s a valuable employee benefit—and one that smaller firms may not be able to afford, making competition for talent tougher.
