Wisconsin no longer a top state of higher taxes

November 19, 2019

The amount of taxes Wisconsinites pay relative to their income has dropped from seventh-highest among the 50 states to 19th highest over the past two decades, according to a new report from the nonpartisan Wisconsin Policy Forum.

Based on the latest available Census Bureau data, the report found that 10.3% of Wisconsin residents’ income went to taxes in 2017 – a 2.1% drop from 20 years ago when residents paid 12.4%.

Wisconsin’s decline in the portion of income residents pay in taxes was the eighth-largest among all the states and second-largest in the Midwest, right behind Indiana, according to the report.
