A new tax form for seniors

February 14, 2020

Senior clients – age 65 or older – who fill out their tax returns by hand on paper now have the option to use Form 1040-SR, U.S. Tax Return for Seniors, which features larger font and better readability.

The new form allows income reporting from other sources common to seniors, like investment income, Social Security and distributions from qualified retirement plans. All lines and checkboxes of the new form mirror Form 1040, and both forms use the same attached schedules and forms.

Married couples filing a joint return can use Form 1040-SR regardless of whether one or both spouses are age 65 or older or retired.
