IRS urges need for multifactor authentication

The IRS is urging tax professionals to use the free multifactor authentication feature offered on tax preparation software products.

Nearly two dozen tax practitioner firms have reported data thefts to the IRS this year. To prevent more thefts from happening, the IRS advises firms to use the multifactor authentication feature for additional data security.

Multifactor authentication requires a returning user to enter their username and password credentials plus an extra data point that only the user knows, such as a security code that’s sent to your phone.
