Protect yourself from public USB charging ports

Public USB charging ports can be found in restaurants, malls, airports and even at Milwaukee’s Summerfest grounds. Although they are convenient, they cause security concerns.

USB ports and cables are designed to charge portable devices and transfer data. Data is transmitted when the device is plugged into a port. Contact lists, text messages, photos and banking information could be transferred to and from the device. A charging port could also run dangerous code on the device—an attack known as juice jacking.

There are several ways to charge a mobile device without risking a data breach.
