The IRS will continue to rely on remote contact between its employees and taxpayers for the vast majority of its cases, states a new memo recently sent to field collection employees.
Only exceptional cases will require face-to-face-meetings and field activities, the memo continues, to make the auditing process easier during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The IRS memo also instructs revenue officers to use gentler procedures when reaching out to individuals about tax debts, taking their stress and fatigue into consideration.
