AICPA: IRS should open Trump accounts for eligible children automatically

March 02, 2026

The IRS and Treasury should automatically enroll eligible children in the new Trump accounts and deposit the corresponding $1,000 seed contribution “to promote fairness and ease administrative burden,” the AICPA said in a letter last week.

Without automatic enrollment, “some taxpayers may be unaware of the program and may inadvertently fail” to open an account or elect into the federal pilot program for the $1,000 contribution, the AICPA said in the letter.

Families should be allowed to opt out of the proposed automatic enrollment, the AICPA said in the letter, which made several other recommendations.
