Overview

This three-part series guides you through practical tax and legal planning issues that CPAs frequently encounter when advising business, real estate and individual clients. This series will address deferred compensation planning for management retention and business owner transitions; restructuring, documenting and closing Section 1031 real property exchanges, including "drop and swap" transactions; and the tax, valuation and substantiation considerations involved in charitable contributions of property.

Daniel Welytok, Shareholder, von Briesen & Roper, s.c.

Daniel S. Welytok is a shareholder in the Milwaukee office of von Briesen & Roper, s.c., where he serves as chair of the firm’s tax section and its opinion review committee. Dan assists clients with tax issues, acquisitions and divestments, capital structuring, financing, corporate governance, licensing and distribution, regulatory and compliance issues, labor and employee benefits matters, and dispute resolution. Dan was appointed in 2018 by the U.S. Department of Treasury to serve on the Internal Revenue Service Advisory Committee on Tax Exempt and Government Entities, and has served on the American Bar Association’s Advisory Committee, articles editor for The Tax Lawyer and chair of the ABA?Tax Law Committee, Young Lawyers Division. He is also a past member of the State Bar of Wisconsin Tax Section Board of Directors and past chair of the TE/GE?Council for the Great Lakes Area liaison with the Internal Revenue Service. Dan is an editorial board member of the TAXFAX column of The Cooperative Accountant. He has authored and edited various tax and law-related books, including the 2018 National Income Tax Workbook, Nonprofit Law & Governance for Dummies, Sarbanes-Oxley for Dummies and The Wisconsin Guide to Nonprofits.

John Sikora, Shareholder, von Briesen & Roper, s.c.

John Sikora is a Shareholder representing clients in tax planning, tax controversies and the buying and selling of businesses and real estate with a particular focus on corporate, partnership and other business matters.

John is an adjunct professor of law at Marquette University Law School, where he has taught the tax practice and procedure and corporate income tax courses. John has also taught the taxation of partnerships and S corporations course to graduate accounting degree candidates at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In addition he has served as the instructor for numerous continuing education programs, including courses offered by the State Bar of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants (WICPA).

John has served as the chair of the Taxation Section of the Milwaukee Bar Association, was the chair of the Board of Directors of the State Bar of Wisconsin Taxation Section, and the editor of the Wisconsin State Bar Tax News.

Robert Teuber, Attorney, von Briesen & Roper, s.c.

Robert B. Teuber is an associate in the firm’s Tax Department. He focuses on tax law controversy and litigation. He is a member of the Wisconsin State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Mr. Teuber received his undergraduate degree from Marquette University and his law degree, magna cum laude, from Marquette University Law School where he served on both the National Moot Court Team and Law Review.
